Full name David Abbott Jenkins, he was a Mormon carpenter and building contractor who was also a speed record and salt-flat legend, who also raced bikes and on dirt-tracks. At the time of his death, he held more World speed records than anyone else. Raced on until he was in his 60's, and later became Mayor of Salt Lake City between 1940 and 1944. Died of a heart-attack whilst on his way to Elkhart Lake to drive the pace car for the upcoming race there. Son Marv, who died in 2008, was also involved with the sport for many years. Jenkins began racing in 1925 in long-distance road events before establishing himself in salt-flat racing.
