Raced in the IRL, but his career suffered a setback in 2003 when he suffered a huge crash in practice for a race in Texas. Made a return to racing in Brazilian stockcars, but reappeared at Indianapolis in 2006. Now no longer driving full-time, he runs a karting track in Bauru and helps coach youngsters, races in motocross, as well as running a series, plus he also is involved in the family sugar cane plantantion, which, amongst other things, produces ethanol. Airton is involved especially in this aspect of the business.
