German Formula 3 champion twice, in 1976 and 1978, his Formula 2 chance came a little early, and surprisingly never got a chance to return to the series. But it is as a very successful team-owner, mostly in F3, which will be his motorsport legacy, and he has helped many drivers reach F1, including Tonio Liuzzi, Tomas Enge and Nick Heidfeld. Started running a team in 1978, which he also drove in for a while. Also raced as recently as 2010 in a special event in Germany. For many years, he ran the ATS Formula 3 Cup series, but stopped doing this in 2014. However, Schafer is still involved in motorsport organisation in lower formulae and in historic single-seater events too, running the HRA Classic Formel 3 series.
