After a serious accident in 1985, Ganassi stopped his relatively modest career soon afterwards to become the team owner - after a spell as joint owner of Patrick Racing for a couple of years - of his internationally acclaimed team, which has won races at the Indianapolis 500, the Daytona 500 and the Daytona 24 Hours.
