Son of Bryan, Herta followed his father into the sport in karts, before quickly progressing to cars. He made his debut, aged just 13, in the SBF 2000 Winter Series. Colton had a varied graduation through the ranks; he competed in Global Rallycross as well as the Asia Cup Series. In 2015, he made a switch to the United Kingdom, competing in the MSA Formula Series, where he won four times. He then stayed in Europe to compete in the Euroformula Open Championship. Colton moved back to the US in 2017 to compete in Indy Lights; he finished third in the series that year and then second in 2018 to earn his Indycar chance. He remains in Indycar in 2024. Although he has been in cars for a while, he actually started on dirt bikes when he was four years old and as a youngster, he also played soccer. Colton also races in endurance and won his class at Daytona in 2019.
