A legend for Alfa Romeo in touring cars, he also won the Italian Formula 3 title in 1969. Picchi took up karting as a teenager and greatly impressed moving up the ranks, but in 1970 moved into saloon car racing instead. Picchi finished runner-up in the European Touring Car Championship in 1971. Gian Luigi then surprisingly retired as a full-time driver at the end of the 1972 season as he had just become a father, but was in various competive series until the 1990's. Still very much keeps links, both with Alfa Romeo, and the wider motor racing historic world.
