Hans grew up on a farm in rural Guntalingen, but became interested in cars, and then became an apprentice car mechanic. He worked as a car mechanic in a number of local garages, including in Andelfingen over an eighteen year period, before in 1988, buying a garage - Bahnhofgarage in Unterstammheim, which has now evolved into a much larger garage, which doubles up as a both a multi-brand car dealership and also a repair and tuning workshop. Hans likes to cycle and ski, but also played football in his youth, and still plays some veteran football now, for FC Stammheim, for whom he also supports as a sponsor. Walther also raced in Formula Vee and Mini Coopers during his career.
