Retired from racing in 1980 and moved to Texas where he operated a hunting lodge. Died of a heart attack. A popular driver, Jim started racing in supermodified stock cars before, during and after a spell serving in the US Coast Guard. Hurtubise was best in sprint and dirt cars though, achieving numerous wins. Herk, as Jim was popularly known as, survived a horrific 1964 crash where he received grevious burns, to return to and then continue in racing until the late 1970's. Hurtubise also won a NASCAR race to show his versatility.
