Thompson is still, as he was when racing, involved in the family firm, Thompson Organization. John is currently vice-president of the firm which is based in Philadelphia. Jack, his father, founded the firm in 1969, which started off selling Toyota cars. Since then it has acquired garages selling the following; MW in 1986, Lexus in 1989, Scion in 2004, Maserati in 2014 and Alfa Romeo in 2015. He remains interested in the sport, as he follows his son Colin's racing efforts in sportscars, whilst father Jack also raced. Thompson himself was a regular in Formula Atlantic, and although he never won, he did finish 2nd at Mid-Ohio in 1988, and took numerous points finishes in his own entered Ralt. Thompson last raced in 2012.
