Successful racer in the Midwest of the United States, but he never really excelled at Indy. A regular racer for some years, a crash in 1936 led to him scaling back most of his activities before retirement in 1938. Sawyer was more at home on dirt ovals, achieving his equal best AAA result on his local track in 1937, finishing in fifth place. His other fifth place came on a road course, at Elgin, in 1933. Other than that, he was a regular at Springfield, Ohio, normally finishing or challenging for a top ten place.
