Spectacular and popular driver, who raced for Toyota in the last two races of 2009 and impressed. This led to a drive with Sauber in 2010 in F1, and he remained there until 2012. Lost his seat, and then moved into the WEC, but in 2014, he returned to F1, with Caterham. However, mid-way through the season, he lost his seat, albeit briefly, before the team then went into administration. In 2015, he moved back to his homeland and the Super Formula championship. His main drive is now with Toyota in the World Endurance Championship. In 2019, he won the Daytona 24 Hours and repeated this feat in 2020. He also races in America's sportscar blue riband events. In 2021, he won Le Mans. In 2022, although still racing full-time in Super Formula and the World Endurance Championship he became team principal of Toyota's WEC team, finding himself in the unusual position of leading the team whilst being a co-driver of two team-mates. He remains in both roles in 2023.
