Nephew of Max, who came over with his uncle's effort in 1923 mainly as an aide and mechanic, but got a brief chance to practice himself. Then when it came to the race, Sailer relieved his uncle, but unlike a lot of drivers who would race for 30-40 laps, Sailer raced from lap 73 until lap 200; 128 laps in total. Karl was a key figure for Mercedes' racing in the mid-1920's and raced, often with Christian Werner, at the Targa Florio, the Rund um die Solitude and the Allrussische Zuverlassigkeitsfahrt in 1923, 1924 and 1925.
