Joined Ferrari in 1990 after a spell in the US after graduating, working in the research and development area for the marque as well as engine design, before leaving in 1999. He then moved to Toyota, where he spent 10 years as the chief engine specialist. Moved back to Ferrari, but after a disappointing 2014, he left by mutual consent. Luca now works with Aston Martin as a consultant, as they evaluate a future in supplying engines to Formula 1; especially after their link up with Red Bull in 2017. Lives in Modena.
