Although often listed as dying on his birthday, in 1918, Mel actually lived until 1951. Often based in California, he settled there in later life. A varied racer, he raced on dirt tracks and road races, achieving many speed records in the latter. A car designer, he also prepared his own racing cars. Stringer, full name Melvin Whitford Stringer, fought in World War One. Mel was working in the fledgling motor car industry in the late 1890's, then later worked as a consultant engineer, remaining in that role until retirement. Mel was also based in New York, marrying there in 1911.
