Son of Church of Ireland missionaries, Lowe grew up in Kenya, and started enjoying racing when the East Africa Rally passed by nearby. After getting his MA at Cambridge University, he worked for Metal Box as a systems engineer for a while, before joining Williams in 1986. Joined McLaren in 1993, and then moved to Mercedes in 2013 and then combined his role as technical director with a team principal role. In 2017, he rejoined Williams in a similar role but it was not a success and he left the role in 2019. He has worked, developed or created many things in F1 including brake steer devices and active differential. Lives in Oxfordshire. In 2021, he established his own company Zero Petroleum, focusing on the creation of synthetic fuel sources and more sustainable hydrocarbons through recycling. In 2024, he returned to F1 as a sponsor to Sauber.
