Berthon was a former Royal Air Force graduate who first began working with Raymond Mays in 1932, when they worked on a Riley car together. One year later, they started ERA, which for most of the 1930's and 1940's was one of Britain's top motor racing teams. BRM came after World War 2 but had many ups and downs. Although born in Burma, Berthon moved to Bristol as a young boy and although he had no engineering training, proved adept at developing racing engines.
