Huge talent killed in a Formula Junior race in France. One of the sport's great lost talents, he had already won the 1961 Canadian GP, comprehensively beating Stirling Moss and Pedro Rodriguez, and also won numerous sportscar events by the time of his early death. Although American born, Ryan was based in Mont Tremblant when he took up racing in the late 1950's. After a strong performance in a privateer Lotus in the US Grand Prix of 1961, Ryan signed a works Lotus contract but went into Formula Junior to gain more experience of European tracks before a likely Grand Prix season in 1963.
