Quintanilla was one of the stalwarts of lower-formulae open-wheel racing in America in the 1980's. He competed in Formula Atlantic, both on the East and West Coast, as well as the ARS. Quintanilla was very much a road course specialist, who did alright on street courses, but didn't race on ovals. After a few patchy years, 1986 saw him finish 3rd in the West Coast Formula Atlantic Series, with wins at Riverside and Sears Point, and numerous other podium finishes. 1987 didn't quite have the same momentum, however, and at 40 years of age, his best chance of progression faded. He continued in various other variations of the Indy Lights series, coming third at Denver in 1991 and carrying on until 1994. He entered his own cars with his own company, Transportes Quintanilla being the main sponsor. Roberto founded the company in 1979 and the firm was established after local growth moved throughout the country. They are based in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas and they have numerous branches throughout Mexico, often shipping cargo to the US.
