Made occasional visits to vintage meetings, until his death. Raced from the 1930's onwards, initially in midgets and raced competitively until his 60's, finally retiring for good in 1983. Mainly in midget cars by far, but also raced in three-quarter midgets, sprints, open-wheel modified cars and NASCAR modified's. His peak came in 1953, when he won an AAA sprint car race at Illiana Speedway, ahead of the likes of Bob Sweikert and Pat O'Connor. Russ also briefly raced sportscars. Died after a long illness. His son, Greg, also raced sprints and midgets, as did his son-in-law Drew Fornoro, whilst his daughter Anne later worked as a publicist for AJ Foyt.
