Santino has been racing since he was just fourteen years of age; he competed in the Skip Barber Formula 2000 Winter Series at that age before moving into the main series. He then had spells in German, European and British Formula 3 as well as spells in New Zealand and Asia before settling in GP3. In 2016, he became the official reserve and test driver for the Haas Formula 1 team and this led to opportunities in Formula 2 initially and then in Indycar in 2018. However soon after his Indycar bow, his career took a nosedive; he was found guilty of deliberately making contact with teammate Arjun Maini after a race had finished, which followed a disqualification for forcing Maini off the track during the race itself. Derogatory comments with alleged racial slurs toward Maini after the race and driving back to the paddock while using his mobile phone and removing a glove brought further punishments which included a four race ban. His Formula 2 team then sacked him and his future looks unclear; he was accused of bad driving during his Indycar spell too, but he did have a temporary return towards the end of the 2018 season and did more than enough to earn a full-time drive in 2019 in Indycar which he retained in 2020. In 2021, he moved to the NASCAR Xfinity series but with some drives in Indycar and remained in both in 2022 and 2023. For 2024, he is back in the Indycar series full-time.
