Competed in three American Racing Series races in 1987, with top 10 finishes (6th, 10th). He then went on to race in the 1988 1988 SCCA GT-1 series and select SCCA Trans Am Series races thereafter. In 1989, Steve, running his own team, purchased a Camaro and mainly focused on the GT-1 Nation Title, winning the NOR-PAC Regional and National Championship Titles. In 1990, he joined up with Greg Pickett to establish a new SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am team for 1991 but in the meantime entered the NOR-PAC, SCCA GT-1 division in 1990, winning the Regional Championship again, as well as the 1990 GT-1 National Championship. He enjoyed a very successful 1991 Trans-Am season, including winning the Rookie of the Year title, and in 1996, won the Independent Challenge Championship discipline of the North American Touring Car Championship (NATCC). Soon after, he went back to running his own team, including in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour Series. From 2015 until 2016, he was a regular in SCCA Trans-Am, before going into a number of different business projects. These include Petty Industries, which he is still involved with, a holding company with interests in design, engineering, manufacturing, aviation & aerospace, automotive performance aftermarket, specialty tools for gas and electric utilities and professional motorsports in both the US and Australia. Prior to this, Steve has been involved in exhaust manufacturing, on-board folding air stairs, Vapor Cycle Air Conditioning, tool manufacturing for the gas utility industry and much, much more.
