Started off as a boxer, winning many pro fights, before becoming a riding mechanic. Curley kept many links with boxing and until his death was a member of the Golden State Boxers Association in Los Angeles. Curley was a great help to Kid Chissell, who became US Navy Middleweight Champion in 1932 and then appeared in over a thousand films. Curley also remained linked with racing as well, as he was a member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's Oldtimers Club. Curley was a regular riding mechanic and for a very long time too; from 1922 until 1934 for Jerry Wonderlich, Red Shafer, Russ Snowberger and Fred Winnai, for whom he relieved during the 1933 race for five laps.
