Legendary driver, but he never did win the Indianapolis 500. Died testing Paul Russo's car at Indianapolis. Born Melvin Eugene, Tony came about because Bettenhausen adored Gene Tunney, the boxer, and Melvin also liked to box like his hero - Tunney became Tony. Bettenhausen started racing in 1937 after help from nearby Illinois resident Emil Andres and did very well. Tony won the 1951 AAA National Championship and the 1958 USAC National Championship as well as taking many other wins. Bettenhausen's three sons, Gary, Merle and Tony, all became racing drivers.
