Raced on for years, including a spell in stockcars, finally retiring in the late 1950's. Later became a welder. Virgil also raced on road courses, but was lucky to survive after his Indianapolis attempt after had a big crash during qualifying when his tyre blew. Often called the Minnesota Daredevil (despite not hailing from that area at all, he was briefly based in Mankato in the state), he was taking midget wins in the late 1940's in places like Cumberland Speedway, a dirt track oval. He appeared in what would become NASCAR in five races between 1950 and 1953, four of them in an Oldsmobile, one of them, his last race, in a Nash.
