Remained with Ferrari as an engineer until his death. He committed suicide after both the recent death of his son and his own serious illness. Born as Viktor Janos, son of a Hungarian couple that had moved from there a few years before, Vittorio began working as an engineer and mechanic at Societa Torinese Automobili Rapid, before joining Fiat in 1911 and then to Alfa Romeo in 1923 to become their chief engineer. He achieved great success in the 1920's there, however by the mid 1930's, things had changed and he joined Lancia, where he remained until 1955, when Enzo Ferrari, who in 1933 raced one of Jano's Alfa Romeo cars, took over the team. Amongst Jano's finest achievements was the P2 and P3 Alfa Romeo Grand Prix car, and the 206 Dino sportscar.
