One of the unsung heroes behind BMW's progress in F1, Laurenz spent most of his career at Audi, becoming a project manager for engine development. He specialised in Audi's touring car programme, but left them to go to Tenneco in 1998, and look at exhaust production and development. It was still a surprise though, when in 1999, Werner switched to BMW and their F1 engine development programme. In 2003, he joined Ilmor Engineering and worked with McLaren in F1, but didn't last long there, and has since returned to BMW as a technical director and advisor.
