3-litre Formula 1 Non-championship events 1966-1983

These results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen (allen@oldracingcars.com) if you can help with our research.

Individual sources for this event

Autosport 21 Mar 1969 pp10-15 (report by Quentin Spurring). Motor Sport April 1969 pp331-333 (report by DSJ, Denis Jenkinson). Motoring News 20 Mar 1969 p12,14 (report by ARM, Andrew Marriott). Autosport gave full chassis numbers and even engine numbers. Motor Sport mentioned chassis numbers in the text of the report only.

16 cars were expected at the Race of Champions: Stewart's still unraced Matra MS80, the latest Ferrari for Amon, the 48-valve BRM P138 for Surtees, backed up by Oliver and Rodriguez again, Hill and Rindt in the Lotus 49Bs, McLaren and Hulme in the McLarens, and Brabham and Ickx in the Brabham BT26As. Of the works cars at Kyalami, only the second Matra was missing. The expected privateers were Siffert in the Walker/Durlacher Lotus, a newly-acquired red Lotus 49B for American privateer Pete Lovely, Piers Courage in Frank Williams' Brabham BT26, David Hobbs in the ex-Bernard White BRM P261 with V12 engine, now owned by Tony Dean, and Jack Smith's old Brabham BT23B for Roy Pike. Williams, following Lotus, Cooper, Brabham, McLaren and Tyrrell, became the sixth of the major British garagiste teams to compete in the 3-litre Formula 1 - or seventh if Rob Walker is included in the count. The new Williams team's Brabham was immaculately turned out, with the conversion work to Cosworth power having been carried out in its own workshops, and had a DG300 gearbox instead of the FG 'boxes on the works cars. The Ferrari could not attend due to a customs strike in Italy, and Dean's BRM could not be prepared in time.
