3-litre Formula 1 World Championship events 1966-1985

These 1966 to 1985 results were initially compiled by Allen Brown, but these were in the very basic form required to track individual car histories. Since then further details, such as laps completed, qualifying times and so on, have been added from Rob Ryder's extensive database.

All comments, clarifications, corrections and additions are most welcome. Please email Allen at allen@oldracingcars.com if you can help with our research.

Two cars were entered by each of Ferrari, Brabham, Tyrrell and Matra, only two this time from BRM after the tragic death of Rodriguez in a sports car race; three each from March as usual, Lotus who had Wisell in the turbine, McLaren who had entered Jackie Oliver in an older M14A, and Surtees who had a car for Derek Bell; and just one this week from Frank Williams. When the third entries from BRM and Ferrari (Andretti) did not arrive, Clarke-Mordant-Guthrie was allowed an entry with a hired March 711 for Mike Beuttler, to bring the total to 24. Beuttler's March 701 earlier in the season had been kept at the March factory and run for Beuttler by ex-Lotus mechanic Bob Sparshott, and this was the beginning of Space Racing in F1, even if it had not yet adopted that name. Oliver's third-string McLaren was tended by Leo Wybrott and Richie Bray. Matra was now such a shambles that the team's transporter broke down on the way from France.

Spare cars were given their own entry numbers: Stewart's Tyrrell 001 (#30), Siffert's BRM P160 (#32), the spare Surtees ST9 raced by Bell (#33), Ickx' 312B2 (#34) and, curiously, Beuttler's March 711 (#35) which was renumbered to 6 for the race, and must originally have been brought along as a spare. Neither Autosport, Motoring News nor Motor Sport gave any clues what #31 might have been.
