Administrator and chartered accountant for Smith and Williamson, the firm who took over the running of the Caterham team when they entered administration in 2014. O'Connell was one of two partners who run the firm, but it was he who led the efforts to try and save the team, and at least made the final GP of the 2014 season. In his role as insolvency practitioner, he has been involved in fraud and asset recovery, taking over the running of gold mines and wheat farms and pension fund management in both Europe and Africa.
