Died at the grand old age of 102 in 2023. He was involved in the family building industry and for years he was involved in a number of projects, including oil refineries. A World War Two flight instructor, he was also chairman of McAlpine Helicopters, Governor of Eastbourne College and High Sheriff of Kent between 1973-1974. He retired from racing to marry and to work in the family construction business, whilst in his spare time he supervised the work on the farm and particularly the vineyard by his house in Kent (sold in 1995), which produced award-winning grapes. He was also awarded an OBE for his work in the English wine making industry. As a matter of interest, his two sons both followed him into motor racing - Richard has - and indeed is still racing a McLaren 1B and James ended his racing with the European Truck Racing Championships in the early 1990's.
