Fry initially started his working life as an apprentice at Thorn EMI in their defence department, working on missiles in particular. In 1987, he moved into motor sport. Having already worked on motorcycle suspension systems, Pat transferred that knowledge to work on Benetton's active suspension system. In 1992, he became Martin Brundle's race engineer before joining McLaren to work on their active suspension systems. When active suspensions were banned by the FIA for 1994, Fry concentrated on race engineering and worked with Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard. He was promoted to chief engineer of race development before joining Ferrari in 2010 as assistant technical director. Fry worked in many roles including as director of chassis and director of engineering. After a two year hiatus, Fry joined Manor as an engineering consultant before rejoining McLaren. In 2020, Fry moved into a joint technical director role (mainly concentrating on chassis) with Renault (now Alpine). He moved to Williams in a senior technical role in 2023.
