Sergio started racing in Brazilian Formula 3 in 2014, aged only sixteen before joining the European Formula 3 series at Imola later that year, competing in three events there. He stayed in the series for the next two seasons before joining Formula 2 in 2017. The move up actually saw better results than in lower formulae with Sergio winning at Spa in his debut season. A strong sixth place in the championship in 2018 followed before a successful 2019 campaign saw two wins (Red Bull Ring and Yas Marina) and a fourth place in the championship standings. He has also been a test and development driver for McLaren and Scuderia Toro Rosso in Formula 1. In 2020, he moved into Indycar racing with his former F2 team, Carlin.
