Notes on the cars:

  1. Brabham BT35 ["30"] (Conny Andersson): Conny Andersson (Sweden) raced a Brabham BT35 in Formula 3 around Europe in 1971, sponsored by Private Press AB. It was observed as chassis BT35-30, but as that car was also reported in Italy, its identity remains uncertain. Andersson raced the car again in early 1972 until his Brabham BT38C arrived, but appears to have kept the BT35 as a backup, and raced it a few times later in 1972 and in 1973. However, Andersson is also reported to have acquired BT35-34. In May 1973, he acquired a March 733, and was not seen in a Brabham again. According to a chassis plate observation reported by the F1 Register, this car went to Curt-Rune Johansson later in 1973. According to Chris Townsend's research, it was Bo Winberg's car in Swedish F3 in 1975. Subsequent history unknown.
  2. Merlyn Mk 21 [328/F3/72] (Håkan Dahlqvist): New to Håkan Dahlqvist for Formula 3 in Sweden and England. Dahlqvist won at Mantorp Park in June and Knutstorp in September. Retained by Dahlqvist's Karlssons Klister Racing Team as a second car in 1973 and driven by Stig Blomqvist and Conny Ljungfeldt. It was then sold to Mats Byström for 1974. To Kjell Andersson for 1975. Retained by Andersson for 1976 and 1977. Subsequent history unknown.
  3. Lotus 69 (Gerhard Witti): Gerhard Witti drove a Lotus 69 in European F3 in 1972 fitted with a Renault engine developed by Franz Albert and entered by Albert Racing Cams and Vienna Race Management. One of these cars would have been chassis 71/69-6.F3 but the identity of the other is unknown.
  4. GRD 372 [013-F3] (Jo Vonlanthen): New to Jo Vonlanthen (Frauenfeld, Switzerland) and raced in F3 across Europe during 1972, mainly using Novamotor's Ford twin cam engines. Also loaned to his friend Kurt Müller (Weisfelden, Switzerland) who raced it in Swiss and German national events in 1972. He acquired a Formula 2 GRD 273 for 1973 and although he entered the 372 for the Nürburgring F3 race on 1 April 1973, did not appear. Vonlanthen did appear once more in a F3 GRD, at Hockenehim on 15 July, presumably in his 372 again. The car was then sold to Bretscher Racing for 1973 and raced by Walter P. Fluckiger (Zofingen, Switzerland) in Swiss national events, including several German F3 races that season. It is assumed that this was the car raced by Vonlanthen in the German national race at Hockenehim on 15 July 1973. It was raced by Kurt Müller again in Swiss events in the early part of the 1974 season, his class suggesting that he was using a 1600cc engine at first. Raced by him in Germany later in 1974, using a 2-litre Novamotor Toyota engine. Chris Townsend believes this car probably went to Urs Freidli, and then to Daniel Costelli in 1978.
  5. March 713S [8] (Hans Deffland): New to Eifelland for Formula 3 and delivered in March 1971. Although there is no contemporary identification of this car's first driver, it was identified by Bonhams in a sale in Germany in August 2003 as Willi Sommer's car, commenting that the car had its original ONS-Wagenpass issued in 1971. Sommer raced a March 713S through the 1971 season as part of the Eifelland Wohnwagenbau team. According to Chris Townsend, it then went to Hans Deffland (Munich, Bavaria) for 1972, entered by Formel Team München. After the 1972 season, Deffland exchanged it for the crashed Porsche 910 of Walter Proebst (Adlkofen, Landshut, Bavaria), and Proebst raced the car in German hillclimbs, initially in the F3 class and later in F2. Bonhams did not account for its history after 1971 until it was restored "1996-99 by Auer of Dortmund".
  6. March 713M [1] (Heinz Lange): New to Eifelland Wohnwagenbau for Hannelore Werner to race in German and European F3 in 1971. To Heinz Lange (Neuburgweiler, Baden-Württemberg) at the end of the season, and used in the Italian F3 series where Lange hired a Brabham BT35 from Scuderia Italia and the 713M was raced by Piergiovanni Tenani, Clois Avigni and "Shangri-Là" (Romano Martini). It may have been raced once by Livio Franzoso in 1973, but apparently retained by Lange that year. Sold to Werner Fischer (Waiblingen, Baden-Württemberg) for 1974, then to Biagio Brandi (Bad Homburg, Hesse) in 1978, and then to Marcel Biehl (Mönchengladbach, North Rhine-Westphalia), who posted pictures of the unrestored car on Facebook in November 2013. Immaculately restored and raced by Biehl in 2015. Sold to former owner Werner Fischer in 2016, and raced by him in the German HRA series in 2017 and 2018.
  7. Brabham BT35 [28] (Josef Ludescher): Josef Ludescher (Winterthur, northern Switzerland) raced a Brabham BT35 in Swiss events in 1971. Retained for 1972 and used in Swiss, German and Italian events. Retained again for 1973. According to a later advertisement, the car was retained by Ludescher until 1983, after which it returned to England for historic racing.
  8. March 713M [8] (Anthony Binnington): New for James Hunt, replacing the 713S he had raced earlier in the season. The 713M was run as part of a newly constituted team run by Chris Marshall, based at his Sloan Marshall Garages in London and entered as Team Rose Bearings with Baty Group. Hunt won first time out, at Crystal Palace in June, and also at Brands Hatch in August, but the car was heavily damaged in a crash during practice at Snetterton in October. Repaired and used by Bob Evans in the Boxing Day meeting at Brands. Bought from the March factory by Anthony Binnington and raced in F3 through 1972. Then to Nick Crossley for one race early in 1973 before his new 733 was ready. To Peter Stahl (Ascot, Berkshire) and raced in the 1600cc class in hillclimbs in 1973. Stahl later went abroad on business and his wife sold the March to Geoff Deakin (Penrith, later Carlisle) who hillclimbed it between 1975 and 1977. It was in 742 bodywork by 1977, and Deakin called it a "742X". Deakin recalls selling the car to a fellow hillclimber who crashed it badly the following year, taking out one side of the monocoque. Photographs show that Deakin's car exactly matches the "742X" hillclimbed by Ken Ayers (Twyford, Berkshire) in 1978 and crashed by him at some point. After this accident, the car was rebuilt on another 1971 March tub, and run with 1975 bodywork until a second accident at Le Val des Terres in July 1979. The car was then rebuilt using a 1975 March monocoque and 76B bodywork, effectively ending its link to the original 713M.
  9. Chevron B17 [17.70.05?] (Maximillian Plass): New to Jürg Dubler (Oberhasli, Switzerland) and raced in European F3 in 1970 using Novamotor engines, and winning at Montjuich Park, Brno and Zandvoort. Bought from Dubler by Austrian sportscar driver Klaus Reisch in 1971 for the new 1600cc F3, using a Wainer-built Alfa Romeo engine, and run by Auto Ascher. Then likely to be the Chevron B17-Alfa raced by Maximillian Plass (Munich, Germany) in F3 in 1972. Subsequent history unknown.
  10. March 713M [6] (Roger Hurst): New to John Bisignano (Denver, CO) and raced in British F3 in 1971 with support from Liggett & Myers L&M tobacco brand. Sold in October 1971 to Roger Hurst (Folkestone, Kent) of Lenham Hurst and raced in F3 in 1972 and 1973. By 1973 the car was being described on occasion as a 723, a 733, a March Falconer, and even as a Lenham LM1. Last raced by Hurst in November 1973. In March 1974, the car was advertised by Low Cost Racing who mentioned that it had Falconer bodywork and was fitted with a Holbay R70 engine for Formula 4. Its history over the next five years is unknown, but in 1979 and 1980, Tony Harris and Colin Brook raced 713M-6 in F4. Subsequent history unknown. A car with this identity was advertised in Italy in 2012.
  11. March 723 (Willi Sommer): Willi Sommer (Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate, West Germany) raced a March 723 in German and European F3 in 1972. It was sometimes described as an Eifelland, but more generally as a March, and was entered by Reifag Racing Team, Darmstadt. Sommer did not race in the early part of 1973, but raced the 723 at Hockenheim in July 1973. He was entered for two British races but did not appear, and then went to a race at Zolder on 26 August where he was not allowed to practice as his Wagenpass was out of date. He drove from Zolder to a hillclimb at Bendorf, but officials there found that his Wagenpass had been altered, and his licence was suspended until March 1975. The subsequent history of the March is unknown.
  12. Lotus 69 (Fredy Link): Fredy Link drove a Lotus 69 in European F3 in 1972 fitted with a Renault engine developed by Franz Albert and entered by Albert Racing Cams and Vienna Race Management. One of these cars would have been chassis 71/69-6.F3 but the identity of the other is unknown.
  13. Royale RP8 [2] (Bernhard Brack): Bernard Brack (Honzrath, West Germany) had raced a NSU and then a Renault 8, before stepping up to Formula 3 in 1972 with a Royale. His car has widely been identified as a RP11 but it seems more likely that it was an older car, in which case the only F3 car sold by Royale prior to the RP11 range was RP8/2, a Formula B car sold to Germany in 1970 in Formula 3 specification. This is confirmed by the report in ONS Mitteilungen for the Salzburgring race on 2 July 1972, which Brack's car is noted as "Royale RP 812". Curiously, there is no record of a single-seater Royale racing in Germany prior to 1972 so its whereabout in 1970 and 1971 remain unknown. Brack acquired a GRD for 1973 and raced that until 1976. The subsequent history of the Royale is unknown.
  14. Lotus 69 [71/69-8.F3] (Carlo Breidenstein): New to Richard Longman for British F3 in 1971, using Novamotor engines. To Carlo Breidenstein (Freigericht, Hesse, Germany) for German and other Formula 3 races in 1972, using Ford engines. Retained by Breidenstein for 1973. He appeared again in the car at ADAC-Bergrennen Alzenau in September 1974, his first appearance for a year. To Peter Rössler (Fulda, Hesse) for German national F3 class events in 1975 and 1976, before moving to a newer Maco 375 for 1977. Rossler drove the Lotus again briefly in early 1978 before it went to Willi Kahlenberg (Mörlenbach, Hesse) in May 1978 for German national F3 class events in 1978 and 1979.
  15. March 703 [7] (Leif Hallgren): New to Leif Hallgren for F3 in 1970, and delivered in March 1970 with a Holbay R70 engine and orange bodywork. Raced by Hallgren mainly in Swedish events, but also appeared in Germany, France and Britain. Retained for 1971 and used in the 1000cc class at some F3 races. Retained again for 1972, and raced at least once, again as a 1000cc. To Glenn Hyatt (Farnham, Surrey) for Formula 4 in 1973. To David Pullen for F4 later in 1973. Next seen with Patrick Capon in F4 in 1976. To Mike Murphy and Dave Chorley as a rolling chassis in 1976, and raced by Murphy at Prescott hillclimb and in Monoposto in 1977, 1978 and 1979. Subsequent history unknown.
  16. Lotus 69 [71/69.4.F3] (Fabrizio Noè): New to Manfred Mohr and raced extensively in European F3 in 1971, using Novamotor engines. Sold to Fabrizio Noè for 1972. Noè had raced a 1971 Lotus 69 in F3 in 1971 but in early 1972 was reported to have sold his car to Fiorenzo Togna and bought Mohr's "monocoque" car to replace it. This suggests Mohr's car had acquired a F2 chassis at some point during 1971. Raced by Noè in Italian F3 in 1972. Subsequent history unknown.
  17. Lotus 69 [71/69.9.F3] (Günter Kölmel): New to Freddy Kottulinsky and raced extensively in European F3 in 1971, using Schnitzer BMW engines and entered by Haj-Haj Racing Team. Raced by Günter Kölmel (Achern-Ohnsbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany) in European F3 in 1972 and 1973, again with BMW engines and entered by Haj-Haj Racing Team. Kölmel raced the car again in F3 in 1974, now using 2-litre BMW engines. Subsequent history unknown.
  18. Lotus 69 [71/69.5.F3] (Harald Ertl): New to Harald Ertl and raced extensively in European F3 in 1971, using Alfa Romeo engines and entered by Weissmann Team Alfa Romeo. It was also raced by Thomas Betzler at two German national races in August. Ertl continued to be entered in the car after that, but did not arrive for any race. Driven by Ertl again at the start of 1972, now with Ford engines and entered by Manfred Weissmann Racing, but he focused on saloon racing that year. Sold to Klaus Scholtyssek (Sprendlingen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany) for 1973 and used in German national events. Subsequent history unknown.
  19. Lotus 69 [71/69.10.F3] (Lella Lombardi): New to Manizio Levi and raced in Italian F3 in 1971, using Ford engines and entered by Scuderia Meneghina. To Lella Lombardi for Italian F3 in 1972, using Novamotor engines and entered by Jolly Club Milano. Subsequent history unknown.
  20. March 713M [7?] (Dietmar Flöer): New to Jim Gleave's MRE (Bourne End, Buckinghamshire) according to March records but MRE do not run a 713M in 1971. Believed to be the car raced by Dietmar Flöer (Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, West Germany) in European F3 in 1971. Retained for 1972 and for 1973, and reppeared again as late as 1975. Likely to be the "712M" that Flöer raced in a German national F2 race in August 1975, then the March 713M he raced in F3 at Wunstorf in 1976 and Diepholz in 1977, and may well be the F3 Eigenbau he raced at Hockenheim in May 1980. Subsequent history unknown.
  21. March 713S [6] (Utz Schad): New to Eifelland for Formula 3 and delivered in March 1971. Identified by Autosport as the car raced extensively through 1971 by Wolfgang Bülow (Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate, West Germany). To Utz Schad (Oberafferbach, Johannesberg, Bavaria) for 1972. Subsequent history unknown.
  22. Brabham BT35 (Philipp Gantner): Jörg Obermoser (Bruchsal, Baden-Württemberg, Germany) drove a Brabham BT35 in German F3 events in late 1971, using BMW engines. Obermoser Getriebe-Motoren (Bruchsal) then entered a BT35 for Obermoser and for Philipp Gantner (Bad Schönborn, Baden-Württemberg) in 1972. Subsequent history unknown.
  23. March 713S (Bernd Breil): Bernd Breil (Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate, West Germany) raced in German F3 during 1972 and 1973, but such is the inconsistency in the way his car was described, it is very hard to be sure what it was. It was described by ONS Mitteilungen as a March, a March 713, and an Eifelland, but also a Rilo March and an Engel. Two photographs on formel3guide.com show a 1971 March, so the current hypothesis is that it was a March 713S. Also, formel3guide.com has identified the car as chassis 713S-1, the car used by James Hunt at the start of 1971, but this is hard to reconcile with the reported later history of that car as Dave Morgan's Formula Atlantic mount, sold to Mike Wilds' backer for 1972. At present, Breil's car is unresolved.
  24. March 703 (Josef Kremer): Josef Kremer (Köln/Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany) ran a March 703 in the 1-litre class of German Formula 3 in 1971.
