Notes on the cars:

  1. March 713S [1] (Chris Pilborough): New for James Hunt to race in F3 in 1971 as part of the Rose Bearings-sponsored March Racing team. Won its first two races but then crashed by Hunt at Silverstone on 8 May, when the car went airborn and hit the sleepers. The March was rebuilt at the factory and raced by Hunt at Zandvoort a week later, only for Hunt to crash again, the car this time overturning and ripping off the rollhoop. Rebuilt as any effectively new car for Dave Morgan, initially appearing as a Formula Atlantic car at Snetterton in late June, and then as F3 car for the GP meeting in July. Raced by Morgan and by Reg James in F/Atlantic later in 1971. Sold in May 1972 to Jack Cavill (Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire), the owner of Mike Wilds' car, and converted back to F3 spec for Wilds until his new Ensign was ready. Retained by Wilds in 1973. Likely to be the "ex-Hunt" car raced by Chris Pilborough in Formula 4 in 1974, and then the "ex-Hunt/Morgan" F4 car of Mark Pritchard in 1976. Maybe Richard Penny's F4 car in 1977. Subsequent history unknown.
  2. GRD 374 [089-F3?] (Marcos Moraes): New to Team Brasil for Marcos Moraes to race in British F3 in 1974. Also raced by his elder brother Luis Correira Moraes after Marcos Moraes was injured while testing. The car was identified as 089-F3 during 1974. Sold for 1975 to Doug Bassett and continued in British F3, but identified now as 090-F3. Bassett reappeared briefly at the start of 1976 in this car. Subsequent history unknown.
  3. GRD 374 [088-F3] (Alex Dias Ribeiro): New to Alex Dias Ribeiro and raced in British F3 in 1974 with Hollywood sponsorship, winning at Snetterton in May. Crashed at Cadwell Park in July and replaced with a new car.
  4. March 743 [22] (Buzz Buzaglo): New to Ippokampos Racing for Australian racer Buzz Buzaglo to use in British and European F3 in 1974. Used by Tom Pryce at the Monaco GP F3 support race. Sold to Bob Arnott for 1975 and retained for the first few weeks of the 1976 season. Sold to Colin Myles (Holmes Chapel, Cheshire) and fitted with a 1098cc Hart engine for hillclimbs from 1979 or earlier.
  5. GRD 372 [035-F3] (Gavin Hooper): New to Tony Brise and raced in British F3 from late August 1972, using Holbay engines and sponsored by Montesa Motorcycles. Retained as a spare car by Brise in early 1973 and raced a few times in preference to his new 373, entered by Team Kent Messenger Racing. After the Monaco GP, Brise bought a March 733 and both his GRDs were retired. Tony's 372 would be the GRD 372 raced by his father John Brise in a libre race at Snetterton in September 1973. This must be the "Tony Brise's 372 GRD-Holbay" that was "rebuilt "after recent shunt" advertised from Swanley in Kent in November 1973. It must also be the GRD 372 "as raced by Tony Brise" advertised by Tony Brise (Swanley, Kent) in February 1974. It was next seen when raced by Gavin Hooper in Formula 4 in April 1974, when it was described as "ex-Tony Brise". It won that first race, at Llandow, but was not seen often after that. It was advertised in December 1974 saying that it was built "last winter" as the Low Cost Racing works F4 car. Raced by Ronnie and Dave Griffiths in F4 in 1975 and 1976. To Keith Hatton for F4 in 1977. However, when Dave Anderson had the "ex-Keith Hatton" GRD 372 in 1978, it was said to be ex-Tim, not ex-Tony. Subsequent history unknown.
  6. Lotus 41C [F3-8] (Roy Lewington): New to Mo Nunn (Walsall) for the 1966 British F3 season, winning one race at Malllory Park in May. Retained for 1967 when it became increasingly competitive, winning four national F3 races that season. Nunn kept the car for a third season in 1968 befoire progressing to a Lotus 59 for 1969. The Lotus 41 went to Mike Watkins for 1969 but was heavily damaged in testing in June. It was rebuild and raced again by Watkins late 1969 but its career finished after well over 100 F3 races when Watkins crashed again at Oulton Park in August 1970. The car was rebuilt again and raced by Bryan Bruce in libre in 1971. It reappeared in 1974 when it was raced in Formula 4 by Roy Lewington (Shoreham, Sussex), still with the 1-litre Broadspeed engines it has used since 1968. Sold to Jim Ward for more F4 in 1975 and then sold as a rolling chassis to John Elmes in 1976 who fitted a Ford twin cam and raced it in Monoposto and sprints during the late 1970 and early 1980s. Then stored until taken to Peter Denty Racing for retoration in 2012. Its first race after restoration was at Cadwell Park in June 2015 when James Denty won an HSCC Historic F3 race.

Note that the identification of individual cars in these results is based on the material presented elsewhere in this site and may in some cases contradict the organisers' published results.

These British Formula 3 results have been compiled by Chris Townsend using the main British magazines Autosport and Motoring News but also the US magazine On Track which carried surprisingly good coverage of the British series.
