28 Apr 1884
Chicago, Illinois

Died:

15 Dec 1916

Nationality:

United States

Indy 500s:

1 (1911)

Badly injured in a crash in the first Indianapolis 500, in which his mechanic Sam Dickson was killed, Arthur's health, mentally and physically, took a downturn from there on. An early car dealer, he was taken to a psychiatric hospital after trying to kill himself, his wife and destroying his apartment. He then suffered another nervous breakdown linked to his chronic back pain. Sadly, complications set in and he died shortly afterwards. Greiner had achieved fame before 1911 as an amateur driver, racing a National Model 40 in a number of events, winning both himself - and the car - the 1910 Best Amateur Trophy award.
