Rio started racing aged fifteen in a number of Asian single-seater series, which included Formula Asia 2.0. In 2009, he also raced in Australia but his career really took off after winning the 2009 Formula BMW Pacific title that year. He then joined Manor in 2010 in GP3, coming an eventual fifth in the series. Haryanto also raced in Auto GP before moving up to Formula 2. In 2015, he won three races and finished an impressive fourth in the series to earn his Formula 1 chance in 2016, the first Indonesian to compete in a Grand Prix. Problems with funding ended his time with Manor in 2016 at the half-way stage of the season. In 2018, Rio announced his retirement as a driver to concentrate on his business; PT Solo Murni, his family company, which is a stationery and books manufacturing company. The business - and Rio - are also involved in local community projects; they donate money to residents whose homes are unfit for habitation due to natural disasters. In 2019, Rio returned to racing to compete in the Blancpain GT World Challenge Series in Asia and the Asian Le Mans Cup Series but is only a part-time racer now.
