Was head of McLaren's automotive division's engine department, but then started his own engine consultancy business in Hertfordshire. In 2016, however, he moved to Sweden to become Borg Warner's Vice-President of Engineering. In 2018, he moved back to Formula 1 as Honda's chief engineer for engine development, which meant a return to England. He is still involved with Honda's powertrain work, even though they have left Formula 1. Axel previously worked for Horiba Europe and as a chief racing engineer for the McLaren team after his spell at Mercedes. Before his spell at Mercedes, Wendorff worked at Toyota, and also as an engine designer at Ilmor.
