Board and dirt oval track specialist who raced from 1930 until 1935 and who also attempted Indianapolis a number of times, as well as acting as a relief driver on occasion. Haustein later worked as an official for the AAA alongside another former Indianapolis 500 starter, Tom Mulligan, which included working at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the 1940's. Gene raced in most AAA events in the early-mid 1930's, with a best finish of fourth twice; at Elgin's road course in 1933 and at Syracuse's dirt oval in 1931.
