No longer racing and initially became involved with the family air cargo transportation firm, Evergreen International, but now runs the firm he started in 1992, Century Aviation, which specialises in historic and classic aeroplane reconstruction and restoration. The firm are based in East Wenatchee, Washington. Sadly, in 1995, Smith, who had just retired from racing the previous winter to concentrate on his firm, was involved in a car crash, where he was driving, that killed his elder brother Michael and another passenger. His brother had also raced in some form in junior racing before becoming a pilot and the company have now opened a museum and movie theatre in his honour as he and his father Del collected historic aircraft.
