Experienced USAC competitor who still holds the record for a lap around Indianapolis for a front wheel drive car in 1965. Mathouser is also the last person to attempt to qualify for Indianapolis in a front-wheel drive car. Mathouser competed in over 30 USAC events, with his best finish coming in 1964, finishing sixth at Langhorne's dirt oval track. He tended to do better on paved ovals though, with a number of top ten finishes over a six year period of racing.
