Killed, along with Eddie Sachs, in a horrific accident on lap two and the resulting fireball (the burns of which MacDonald died of later in hospital), in the 1964 Indy 500. An ex-drag racer, Dave was a gentleman but as a driver was fierce, fun and fearless. He drove a lot of his career with Corvette, and was inducted into the National Corvette Museum's Corvette Hall of Fame in 2014, and into the United States Road Racing Championship (USRRC) Hall of Fame in 2016. His legacy often appears to be the sideline that he died alongside Eddie Sachs, but Dave was an extremely gifted sportscar driver, with many wins to his credit over ten years of racing.
