Good friend of Guillermo Ortega who joined him in his ambitious Le Mans and European trip. Merello raced for three decades, from the 1960's onwards. Suffered an accident in 1999, being badly injured in a road crash which he was lucky to survive, but the consequences of the accident (abdominal injuries) meant a downturn of health, and sadly Fausto passed away in 2014. Merello raced Mini Cooper and Austin Healey Sprites in his homeland before joining Ortega to race in Colombia initially, then the US and then Europe, mostly in sportscars, but also in Formula 2 with Ron Dennis. Merello returned to Ecuador and took a notable win in 1977 in the 12 Horas de Yahuarcocha, again with Ortega.
