First name was John. US citizen despite being of Canadian birth. An engineer, he worked at Chandler-Cleveland, who often tested cars at the Indianapolis Speedway, so they could see how they performed over long distances at high speed. They often competed in rallies and hill-climbs likewise. In 1927, he was at the '500 for those reasons and eventually served as mechanic and relief driver. An engineer and designer, he put in for a number of patents, and was also involved in tractor and radiator design.
