Better known as a sprint car driver, who had great success in the category, particularly in the US Midwest. As well as his single-seater spell, he also competed in dirt-track racing. Raced on in sprints, as well as midgets, for years, and also worked as a car owner. He settled in Indianapolis, where he ran an automobile repair shop, working as a mechanic and chassis builder. He was a fabricator who specialised in sprint car engine building amongst others. His two sons, Jerry Jr. and Jeff also raced in sprint cars. He moved to Alberquerque as a boy and starting racing there in drag and sprint cars and then followed this up when he moved to Florida in the late 1960's. Shortly after his Indianapolis 500 attempt, he was injured in a crash and was forced to retire with his injuries. He also enjoyed slot car racing.
