Later became an AAA supervisor and died of a heart-attack during a track inspection for the upcoming championship race. Also worked as a car dealer, mechanic and garage owner. Until Troy Ruttman beat his record in 1952, Dawson was the youngest winner of the Indianapolis 500, aged just twenty-two when he won the 1912 Indianapolis 500. Dawson, who stopped racing in the mid-1910's was one of the very best racers of his era. He drove at Indianapolis again in 1928, when he drove a Marmon 8 pace car.
