Diabetes ended his career. No relation to Howdy Wilcox Sr, despite also being from Indiana. Primarily a dirt track racer, he overcame the fact he had been left blind in one eye after a racing accident. Because of this and his diabetes, Wilcox had planned to stay at dirt track level only, but covered Shortly Cantlon when Cantlon broke his leg shortly before the 1932 Indianapolis 500. Wilcox was killed whilst acting as a starter at a race, when stepping forward to show a flag to Jimmy Wilburn, Wilcox was hit by another unsighted driver coming up closely behind Wilburn.
