Killed in a plane crash one day before Alan Kulwicki's fatal plane crash on a black weekend for the sport. Best remembered as a sportscar driver, he was an IMSA regular who took many class wins. Chip's real name was Harry Talbott Mead Jr. and he started out in US Formula Super Vee. He also raced in Can-Am and the North American Formula Atlantic Series. His best CART finish was ninth. Mead ran a real estate development business in St. Simon's Island, Georgia, but then moved towards the end of his life to California, where he owned an aircraft sales firm in San Jose, which he continued to do until his death.
