Killed in the 1935 Indianapolis 500, when he sustained a broken neck in a crash at turn four of the Speedway. A youthful and inexperienced rookie whose death was the catalyst for the Indianapolis 500 to introduce rookie tests. Although born in Illinois, Weatherly lived most of his life in Wisconsin, in both Rhinelander and Janesville, and was based at the latter when he entered the '500. Clay played American Football at Janesville High School, playing in the fullback position. Weatherly took up racing at a local level in 1932, but the '500 was his first major race.
