Later became an aeronautical official, becoming the official timer for the National Aeronautical Association. Winner of the 1909 Los Angeles to Phoenix road race, he was one of the best of his era at this discipline. Badly hurt in a crash at Indy in 1913, his racing career more or less stopped, although he later attempted land speed records. Joe returned to speed records, but with planes, in the 1930's, often being the official to verify successful record attempts. Brother Louis also raced and won the 1911 Chanslor & Lyon Trophy at Santa Monica.
