Based mostly in Tennessee, he worked as a repairman. Tried numerous times to make the Indianapolis 500, but his debut year was the only time he did make it. Probably best on dirt oval tracks, he retired after failing to qualify at any of the three big AAA races he entered - Indianapolis, Milwaukee and Springfield - in 1947. Appears to be no relation to Charles W. Crawford, the chief engineer for Cole in the 1910's, or Wesley Crawford, who raced around the same time.
